Friday, October 29, 2021 Today, Urban Outfitters unveils a dedicated Urban Renewal shop-in-shop within its flagship Herald Square store in New York City. Urban Renewal is the brand’s apparel and home goods division made up of one-of-a-kind vintage, recycled and reworked pieces. Since opening its first store in 1970, Urban Outfitters has placed an emphasis on found objects and recycled, bulk materials for retail displays and fixtures. Urban Renewal extends this ethos to its customers, sourcing deadstock fabrics and merchandise from around the world to create upcycled items for UO.
Expanding the Renewal strategy is another step in Urban Outfitters’ ongoing commitment to circular fashion, further upholding the brand’s heritage of reuse. In addition to significantly growing the assortment and expanding the Urban Renewal strategy in retail, Urban Outfitters has existing non-profit partnerships with Brooklyn-based FABSCRAP to recycle fabric waste from its knitting, sample, and pattern-making rooms.
Conceived as an immersive extension of the Urban Renewal brand, the new Herald Square retail space features design elements intended to reflect the juxtaposition between vintage and modern materials.
The shop includes over 300 individual pieces curated by the dedicated Urban Renewal team in addition to capsule collections and exclusive collaborations from Pentimento Shop, Rclmd.la, 4X111, Tried & True and Second Base Vintage. There will also be an assortment of Urban Renewal homeware products, including premium furniture made from recycled fabrics, one-of-a-kind rugs, vintage crochet throws and other small home decor items.
Supporting the launch of the shop, Urban Outfitters is hosting an opening celebration as well as ongoing pop-up events through the end of the year. The event will take place on November 4th from 5-8pm and include closet sales from four NYC creatives within the fashion industry, a community weaving installation from WEGATHER and a pop-up + natural wine bar from Amborella Organics. Freelance editor Michelle Li, stylist and editor Jo Rosenthal, Teen Vogue’s Creative Director Mi-Anne Chan and owner of size inclusive vintage shop Berriez, Emma Zack will each have apparel collections for sale and be in attendance to meet and greet with attendees. Urban Outfitters will match closet sale profits to W.O.W. Project with a minimum $5,000 commitment.
